Country Acres Homestead Is On YouTube
Friends! We are so excited! This has been a long time coming and is way overdue.
Our blog is awesome and we truly love our blog. It gives us a chance to chat about the more personal side of homesteading and share a few management and how-to type posts with everyone. That being said, we have a few things coming up over the next several weeks that a simple blog post just won’t work for. We want to bring you our homestead in action and YouTube gives us a chance to do that!
Today we picked up our 8 Meaties (Cornish Crosses) that we will raise to butchering weight and for the first time, we will fill our freezer with meat we raised and processed ourselves. This is really exciting for us as it’s something new and it’s a huge step towards self-sufficiency. If everything goes according to plan (minus the bumps in the road that we are sure to encounter), we will then raise a heritage breed to sustain our meat supply long-term.
And what’s really exciting?! Thanks to Cackle Hatchery, we also have the most adorable 6 Bourbon Red Turkey Poults ever! Reds are not your typical production type turkey that you can find in the grocery store. They are a heritage breed and are able to reproduce. This means that having a Tom within our turkey flock, we will be able to take you on the journey of breeding and raising our Reds for self-sustainability. We will be sharing with you their journey, from the amazing brooder that Homesteader Hubby and I worked on together through butchering day and how we made the very hard decision of which Reds would be staying on our homestead for future breeding.
Something for a little fun, we are also adding 2 Light Brahma’s to our layer flock. They are beautiful, gentle creatures and I can’t wait to be able to experience them on our homestead.
